What are steroid drugs? If you ask most people they cannot distinguish steroid drugs from any other drug on earth. Because steroid drugs have such a dreadful reputation thanks to their portrayal in popular culture, most view them in the same light as recreational drugs such as cocaine, heroin or anything else you can think of that a junkie would use. Is this a fair comparison, more importantly is it accurate? Hardly, in-fact, it’s downright idiotic. Even so, it is the manner by-which most perceives steroid drugs simply because they’ve been told to. Ask yourself this question, if you were told an apple was akin to cocaine would you believe it simply because you’ve been told to? We sincerely hope not.

Types of Steroid Drugs:

There are literally thousands of various steroids found in nature, many which human beings produce. Of the synthetic steroid drugs we administer there are generally two categories, anabolic androgenic steroids and anti-inflammatory steroids or corticosteroids. Many have gone to their doctor and had a corticosteroid injected, and while it may sound ridiculous to some of you, there are those who actually think they’ve been injected with a performance enhancing drug. So what’s the difference in these two classes?

1. Corticosteroids: Largely include glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid hormones, with glucocorticoids being primary. Quite commonly, such hormones are injected to provide anti-inflammatory relief. The most common of this class are Dexamethasone and Prednisone. Such corticosteroids are often used to treat arthritis, asthma and any condition that might cause joint or muscle discomfort.

2. Anabolic Steroids: Largely based off of the naturally occurring androgens Testosterone and Dihydrotestosterone. By their nature, anabolic steroids correlate with the androgen receptors of the body, thereby promoting anabolism, enhancing metabolic activity and regulating the male sex characteristics. There are numerous anabolic steroids available, most commonly Testosterone, Nandrolone, Trenbolone, Oxandrolone and Stanozolol as well as many others. In therapeutic cases, anabolic steroid drugs are often used to treat hormone deficiencies, in the treatment of muscle wasting diseases and, in some cases, in the treatment of severe burn victims.

Performance:

While there are two general classes of steroid drugs, most are more interested in those of an anabolic nature. There are numerous anabolic androgenic steroids, with Testosterone being primary. Within each form, there are also many other forms. For example, the hormone Testosterone can be found in numerous forms, as can most anabolic steroids. Regardless of the form, again, using Testosterone, the hormone itself does not change; the differences are regulated by esters or lack thereof. While there are numerous forms, too many to list, all steroid drugs of an anabolic nature carry anabolic and androgenic properties that largely regulate the hormones action. In this regard, each steroid carries an anabolic and androgenic rating; all ratings are measured against the primary anabolic steroid Testosterone. The ratings can largely show us what the steroid will do, but it is at times a bit misleading, for we must also understand the way its anabolic and androgenic nature performs once inside the body.

What to Expect:

Depending on the steroid drugs you choose, what you can expect can vary quite dramatically. Many anabolic steroids are well-suited for buildups in mass, while others strength. Many anabolic steroids do more for conditioning and preserve muscle tissue and strength when in a caloric deficit. Each steroid carries a primary function, but most steroid drugs also carry secondary characteristics apt towards another purpose, and some are so versatile they are perfect for all purposes.
